Designing for All Ages and Abilities
The National Association of Transportation Officials published, the paradigm shifting approach to bicycling, Designing for All Ages and Abilities in January, 2018. You can read the document in its entirety HERE.
Designing for all ages and abilities is really not new. It is just that it has primarily been implemented in western European countries such as Holland, Germany and Denmark where they have reinvented their bicycle systems to serve everyone (see Making Cycling Irresistible). Cities both locally and throughout the US have a lot of catching up to do. Fortunately, the rules governing transportation planning in Oregon require that local governments create a “safe and convenient” bicycling network; no different from what we all expect from the motor vehicle system. We just have to embrace the challenge of ensuring that local governments follow the law.
Please volunteer to help make bicycling is a mainstream, comfortable and safe choice for people of all cultures, ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Write the Club’s president at president@siskiyouvelo.org to find out how you can help.
