Siskiyou Velo launches free bike valet at Siskiyou Challenge race!

by Ann Smith on Apr, 29 2019

The 9th Annual Siskiyou Challenge, a six-leg bike/run/paddle relay race benefiting Rogue Valley Farm to School, was held in Ashland this past Saturday. Following the culmination of the race on the lawn at ScienceWorks, Siskiyou Velo hosted a booth at the Health & Fitness Expo. We had the opportunity to talk to event participants about our Club rides and social events. Several attendees took the time to discuss the state of our bicycle network and how it can better serve bicyclists of All Ages & Abilities. The event was very well attended with 72 teams participating in the race and many supporters also in attendance at the Expo.

Siskiyou Challenge also marked the launch of our Club’s new Free Bike Valet. With great success and exceeding all expectations, we received and secured 31 bikes for event participants, mostly racers. Our interest in providing this service is to break down barriers that discourage attendees from riding their bikes to community events while building a strong connection between our Club and our communities. Our mission is to promote bicycling as a fun and healthful activity that reduces congestion, carbon emissions and expansive land use associated with automobiles. The more people who opt to ride their bikes, the more authority we gain to advocate for a safe and convenient bicycle network that benefits everyone.

We would love for our members to join us at these events and help us promote the joys we’ve all experienced bicycling. This endeavor is not possible without the dedication of your Club board and its active membership. Siskiyou Velo President Harlan Bittner as well as board members Mark Moran, Gary Shaff, and Ann Smith, along with new member Joe Smith, spent part of their Saturday volunteering to staff the booth and bike valet. The next time you see them, ask them how much fun they had!

Siskiyou Velo will be present at many events to come including the upcoming Peak to Creek Ride and Medford RecFest this Saturday, May 4th at Hawthorne Park. Please take an hour or two of your time and join us at our booth. To volunteer, visit bit.ly/svvolunteers for sign up information!
