Crater Lake - Vehicle Free Days on 9/17 and 9/24
by Gary Shaff on Aug, 29 2016
Crater Lake National Park will host two hiking and biking days on East Rim Drive, September 17 and 24, 2016. If you’ve road the Rim Drive before or have every hoped to do so, these days offer a great opportunity to do so without cars and RVs on 24 miles of the 33 mile rim route. East Rim Drive will be closed to motor vehicles to the North Entrance Road. However, West Rim Drive, Munson Valley Road and Highway 62 through the park will remain open for motorized vehicular traffic. More information about riding the Rim is available HERE. There is a courtesy and no-fee registration site.

I rode the 24 miles yesterday, what a great ride lots of climbing and views of lake. I recommend coming in from the north to avoid lots of traffic and bikes on the rode that chose to ride areas that were not bike only, there were hundreds of bikes that started from south entrance where they had to deal with car traffic and the dirt area on the west side did not look fun. The protected area was more than enough, I recommend it, have fun.

Re CRATER LAKE RIM UNPAVED SECTION: Piece of cake. Fine surface. A bit dusty when cars went by. So non-event I forgot to photograph. I was on 28's Friend on 25's. Did not seem 3 miles long. It's mildly uphill, mostly, small downhill.
