New paper and webinar on equity issues in ped/bike planning
FHWA and PBIC release new paper and webinar on equity issues in ped/bike planning
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and PBIC released a new white paper exploring ways transportation professionals can pursue and achieve more equitable processes and outcomes when planning and developing multimodal transportation systems.
“Pursuing Equity in Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning” offers a clear and concise overview of how equity plays a role in our transportation system. The paper provides an overview of how equity is defined by FHWA in transportation planning, research on the transportation needs of underserved populations, strategies to address pedestrian and bicycle inequities, and many applied examples and additional resources. Strategies include practical guidance for fostering inclusive public involvement in the planning process and ways to leverage data to identify opportunities.
As with all PBIC-produced white papers, “Pursuing Equity in Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning” is designed to provide relevant information and practical ideas that working transportation planners and engineers can easily incorporate into their regular course of business.
This new resource can be downloaded at: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/bicycle_pedestrian/resources/equity_paper/.
PBIC also will hold a webinar on July 26 (1:00 – 2:30 PM Eastern Time) discussing how transportation professionals can pursue equity in their efforts. It will include discussions from communities that have worked to pursue equity in their communities.
