Ride Description

Ride goes out through Applegate Valley and follows Applegate River for many miles.

About

The ride starts normally at the Jacksonville Library parking lot. There isn't much of a warm up before you climb up Jacksonville Hill. This is a climb of 600 feet over about 2.5 miles. The steepest part is 6-8% for a short period. You drop into the valley towards Ruch and continue on to the small community of Applegate. At this point you can continue on Hwy 238 to Murphy or take a lesser traveled road by going on N. Applegate Road, This route has less traffic and follows the river more closely. There is nice tree cover for most of this route so even in the summer this is a beautiful road to travel. There are many rolling hills on N. Applegate Road that adds to the elevation totals. The other main elevation gain is the climb from Ruch back to the top of Jacksonville Hill. This is a climb of 600 feet over about 5 miles. The gradient is 4-5% for most of the climb before a fast descent for the final 2.5 miles back into Jacksonville.

Directions

Start at the Jacksonville Library and take Hwy 238 out of town toward the city of Ruch. Follow Hwy 238 out of Ruch for 7 miles to reach the community of Applegate. At Applegate you have a choice to continue on Hwy 238 into Murphy or divert to take N. Applegate Road. Each of these will take you to Murphy where we usually stop at the 76 gas station/store. Depending on the direction you took the distance is the same if you go clockwise or counter-clockwise around this portion of the route. You can take an alternate route if you stay on Hwy 238 from Applegate and divert at Provolt to follow the road into Williams and then back to Hwy 238 into Murphy. This will add about 7 mile to the route or up the total miles to 62.5 without a lot of additional climbing.

Traffic

Traffic on Hwy 238 is busy most of the time but the shoulder is wide in most locations so it is easier to deal with. There is no shoulder on N. Applegate Road but the traffic is light and most people are very courteous. If you take the side route to Williams from Provolt, the traffic is also very light and even without a shoulder it is a good loop. The road pavement on all of the roads is very smooth although N. Applegate has some bumpy sections.

At the end of the cuesheet it says to turn right on 3rd. We will stay on N 10th Street and head back to the church. The ride is under 40 miles.
